Funny moments exist in every relationship.

Very few relationships have two comedians in them, willing to hand the awkward parts to a room full of strangers.

Doug and Teresa Wyckoff met in Hawaii, performing comedy. Married. Still married. That's most of the act.

They noticed early that as the relationship got more serious, the material did too. Everything either of them wrote ended up being about the other one. So they stopped fighting it, joined forces, and co-headlined a duo show that sold out in Portland before they took it across the Hawaiian islands.

Doug proposed at a comedy show. Of course he did.

The He & She Show

Teresa opens with a solo set. Doug follows with his. Then they come back out together for an hour built entirely on marriage advice the audience writes down and hands over.

Real questions. From real couples. Answered live by two people who have been arguing about the same things for well over a decade.

No two shows are ever the same, because no two rooms are. And the whole thing runs clean or runs blue, depending entirely on what the room wants.

48 states in one summer

After the wedding came Oregon, a teenage son living with them full time, small-town politics, and the ordinary chaos of building a family. All of which turned out to be excellent material.

They worked the Northwest for a couple of years, casinos and comedy clubs, playing the rooms between football games and wrestling matches. Then their son graduated, left for a year abroad, and Doug and Teresa did the obvious thing: they put the show in a car and went after all fifty states.

In one summer they played 48.

Then, two states short of the entire country, New York called. They took it.

Maine and Alaska are still out there, unplayed. Depending on who's asking, that's either an unfinished tour or a standing invitation.

And then abroad

The tour didn't stop at the border. Two European tours, a Middle East tour, and a full month in Scotland for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Shows from Paris to Cairo.

Six countries, and a working theory that marriage is funny in all of them.

Date Night

While they lived in Manhattan, Doug and Teresa produced a monthly showcase called Date Night, where comedians answered the audience's questions about dating, sex, and relationships.

It was nominated for Best New Show at The Creek and The Cave, and later ran as a monthly on the fourth Sunday at the New York Comedy Club.

Along the way the room collected unannounced drop-ins from comedians the audience knew from television and film. That's the deal with drop-ins, so no names here. But it's the part Doug and Teresa are proudest of: working comics who didn't need the spot kept turning up anyway, because the format was more fun than a regular set.

Producing a monthly room in Manhattan means booking it, promoting it, filling it, and hosting it, every single month, in the most competitive comedy market in the country. Date Night ran its course and has since closed.

The day job is also comedy

Manhattan became Los Angeles, where Doug and Teresa built a production company.

They make ads. Specifically, funny ones: humorous, memorable, genuinely converting creative for YouTube and Meta. It turns out that fourteen years of learning what makes a room laugh in the first eight seconds is a transferable skill, and that most brands are desperate for someone who can do it.

So the joke is the job, in both directions. On stage, the laugh is the point. On a paid social feed, the laugh is what keeps someone watching long enough to buy something.

Golf happened

Doug played for years. Teresa did not, in the way spouses famously do not.

Then she picked up a club, and the household economics reversed overnight. He used to have to build a case for new irons. Now he finds out about hers when they arrive, and the argument he'd rehearsed for a decade has nowhere to go.

It has taken over more of their calendar than either of them intended. Courses all year long (even in the rain) and a running disagreement about whose fault the last three-putt was that will almost certainly end up in the show.

Where they are now

Los Angeles became the Portland metro area, which is where they're currently based, between trips.

The kids have had the decency to grow up, get married, and scatter across Colorado, Arizona, and Washington. Six grandchildren so far.

An established headliner in his own right, Doug Wyckoff was a founding member of Power Up Comedy, the Hawaii comedy group and production company.

You can see him on Grey's Anatomy and CSI: New York, and if you look closely, in Bridesmaids. Doug is irreverent and gleefully non sequitur, a lone wolf howling at the moon who is nonetheless the leader of his pack, at least in age and in his own mind. He has headlined from the world famous Comedy Store to monthly shows on Maui to casinos and comedy clubs across the mainland, and once, memorably, a children's show.

Teresa Wyckoff

Dry, sarcastic, and quietly witty, Teresa Wyckoff turns her most embarrassing moments into everybody else's favorite part of the night.

She grew up in the Portland metro area but didn't start performing until she moved to North Carolina, and then New York City. Wanting to live somewhere just as expensive as New York but considerably warmer, she moved to Maui, where she met a comedian named Doug Wyckoff and became a founding member of Power Up Comedy.

Her comedy is subtly a bit naughty, wrapped in an innocent package, which is how she gets away with it.
